DR Congo Battles Fastest-Growing Ebola Outbreak as Death Toll Surges
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is struggling to contain its fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history, driven by the rare Bundibugyo virus for which there is no approved treatment or vaccine. With over 4,000 deaths out of roughly 8,300 confirmed cases, response efforts are severely hindered by unpaid health workers going on strike, violence against officials, community mistrust, funding cuts, and military disruptions—including the destruction of a transit center that forced 19,000 displaced people to flee.
